Hispanics have one of their own running for the Senate in Massachusetts. Gabriel Gomez, a U.S. Naval Academy and Harvard Business School graduate, Navy Seal, successful businessman, and father of four is pitted against political hack Ed Markey, a Congressman for the last 37 years. As impressive as Gomez’s credentials are compared to his opponent, he is the underdog.
One would think voting Hispanics would flock to Gomez in droves just like 91% of Blacks voted for Barrack Obama. Alas, this will not be the case, since the voting instructions of union bosses and the lure of the welfare state will prove too large of an enticement. Although Gomez is a role model for Hispanics, voter apathy and Markey’s campaign smear tactics will once again put a drone in Congress.
There is a valuable lesson regarding immigration reform to be learned from this campaign. Some conservatives opine if the Republicans do not support some type of immigration reform now, then the chance of capturing significant Hispanic support will be lost. This is nonsense, and no reason to draft poor legislation just to have it on the books. Regarding the Hispanic vote, it makes no difference whether ill conceived laws are written now or thoughtful ones enacted in years to come. Other than Cuban Americans, Hispanics march lock step with the Democratic Party and will do so for the foreseeable future. A tradition of hard work, family values, and Catholic faith are being eroded for the promise of entitlement and wealth redistribution.
Look at the Massachusetts Senate race. As long as Gabriel Gomez is running as a conservative, in the Latino eye he is no more Hispanic than Adolf Eichmann .
